French Connection Closing Its UK Stores

 

If you're a fan of the classic '80s line French Connection, then you'll be disappointed to hear that the brand has been forced to close its stores after falling behind the times. In an attempt to turn things around, the company has been focusing on its online offerings and selling off stock at a discount. However, the move has proven too little too late and sales have dropped significantly in recent months.

The company has announced that it's permanently shutting down 14 of its stores across the country. This includes locations in Bluewater, Brent Cross and Lakeside shopping centres. The company has blamed the drop in sales on a shift in fashion trends. As the zeitgeist moved away from combat pants and girl-power pouts to something more streamlined and safe, the line was left behind.

Marks and Spencer has been trying to revive the label with new collections, but it appears that the move may be too little too late. Last month, it reported a loss of PS5m and warned that it's likely to lose money in the coming year. Shares have fallen by as much as 15 percent in response.

While the French Connection label was never as well known in the US, it was a staple in the closets of fashionable Brits.
